On Sunday, Robert A. Teclaw went home to be with the Lord. He was 84 years old.
Bob was director of the Alumni Drum Corps. In 2006, the Corps was incorporated and Bob was made the drum major. Under his leadership, the Alumni has entertained crowds all over Western New York and Pennsylvania.
Bob had been involved in drum corps ever since he was a young man, starting as a cymbal player with the old Flying Dutchmen Drum Corps. He eventually played drums and then he was voted in as drum major. It was a big deal in those days, because you really had to know your stuff. According to his friends, Bob learned to be a drum major from Bitzy Briggs, the Dutchmen’s horn instructor, whom he highly respected.
Bob was a major factor in the forming of the Patriots Drum Corps, which won their first field show under his leadership.
Bob and his corps have won numerous awards and trophies throughout the years. A parade was not a parade without seeing Bob leading his corps with pride. Many people knew and respected him. His knowledge and leadership will be sadly missed by family, friends and Alumni membership. Nobody has done more to keep drum corps alive in Western New York than Bob has.
He will be missed.

The WNY Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps, Inc. recently held its second annual banquet at the Kosciuszko Club. Entertainment was provided by the Alumni Drum Corps, which played a concert for family, friends and guests. Patrons from the bar, as well as caterers, also enjoyed the concert.
Corps Director, Robert Teclaw, thanked all the members and their families for their support throughout the season. Teclaw gave special thanks to Jack Kujawa, Corps Business Manager, for keeping the corps business going in his absence.
Corps member, Carl Vullo, expressed appreciation for the younger members of the group, “As older members, we feel like we’re here to help the younger members but in fact they are helping us and they do it with respect.”
This year’s brass instructor and music arranger is Jonathon Fridmann of Fredonia.
Kujawa said, “I can’t begin to tell you how much talent this young man has; he’s amazing.”
Drums will be taught by Kujawa.
The Corps starts its new season Thursday, November 5 at 7 to 9 p.m. The group will rehearse at American Legion Post 62, 211 Central Avenue, Dunkirk.
Members and new members should attend this rehearsal. The group will be learning new music.

This is the final parade of the season for us. “Over all a very good season,” remarked Corps Director and Drum Major, Robert Teclaw. “We performed in eight parades, as well as playing a few concerts.” The corps is in the planning stages of their end of the season party. The party, for members, their families, along with instructors and guests should be a great time for all. The corps’ new season will start sometime in November. Anyone wishing to join can call Jack at 410-2682 for more info.
